Thank you! I cannot believe that people are actually on here yelling at each other & bickering about stuff that means nothing. A child is dead. Another innocent child will grow up knowing he was the cause. A multitude of lives have been completely ruined. The lack of human compassion & simple common sense on this website is astounding, & quite frankly, terrifying.

George, the quotes to raise are to do just that- raise. It doesn't include anything else except jacking up my house. Everything else is in addition to the costs I listed 'to raise'.

My house is a 2 story cape, approx. 1400 SF, & is approx. 30' x 35'. Quote to raise- $19,500 (this would be to put in a masonry foundation). Quote to raise & roll to the side (to put in piliings)- $31,500. I was told that my house would need between 30 & 40 pilings, & the cost per piling is $250 installed.

So because a tiny amount of homeowners who were affected by Hurricane Sandy would lose a strip of land in front of their homes, tens of thousands of other homeowners should just suck it up. They pay a lot in property taxes because their homes are worth a lot of money. The tax rate is the same regardless of the value of your home, so if you choose to own a home that is worth a large sum, you are also choosing to pay the comensurate property taxes. The government has had no problem using eminent domain to displace poor & middle class people, but when it comes to their wealthy brethren/contributors, it's hands off. It's time the 99% stood up & demanded to be treated equally- or should I say, demand that the 1% be treated the same as the rest of us.

"Me...me...me. That's all you think about." "...but its not my problem."

You don't even realize you're talking about yourself. Irony- it's a beautiful thing.

BTW, we are not looking for handouts. We are looking for the insurance money from the companies we paid premiums to for years, who are not forthcoming with the funds for us to repair our homes. FYI our world HAS stopped- we have no place to live & no money to do anything to fix our homes on which we are still paying monthly mortgage payments. My neighborhood looks like the ghetto- destroyed homes, garbage everywhere, most homes unoccupied- why don't you organize a bus trip for the bennies to see that- I'm sure it will generate lots of tourism dollars for those who lack both empathy & common sense.

I would be happy to share my part of the shore with you. Which would you prefer- the flooded out shell that was my house, the mounting debt for things that aren't covered by insurance, or the insurance money that still hasn't come? Or perhaps living on the 2nd floor of my house with no kitchen & no heat during a cold, windy winter? You are welcome to come & sit for a while- oh, that's right, I couldn't afford contents coverage on my flood policy so I have no furniture, so you should bring your own chair. But, by all means, the focus should be on tourism this summer. Enjoy the boardwalk while I try to decide if I should go into an abyss of debt to raise my home, which I am being forced to do, or walk away from 20 years in the only thing I've ever owned.

tlc, There are many non-profits working up & down the coast assisting people just like you. Samaritans Purse is one such organization. Contact your local municipality & ask if they have any contact info; also, contact local churchs in your community. In TR Grace & Peace & also the 1st Presbyterian Church have teams of people assisting for free. The help is out there- you need to start asking around. PS- totally disagree w/ your opinion on flood insurance- you wouldn't be looking for free assistance if you had it. I have major damage to my home & have insurance- still waiting on a check- but over the 18 years I've owned my home, I've paid a total of about $35K. My damage is over $100K- so it more than makes my premium payments worth it. I hope you give it another consideration. God bless you & good luck.

You are entitled to your own opinion but you are not entitled to your own facts. President Obama had nothing to do with the delay in approval of funding- that was completely the doing of the republicans in the House of Representatives, led by John Boehner. Gov. Christie made that very clear himself.
